Making Homemade Sprout Bags:
- 1 yard Rayon/linen mix –washed (to shirk)
- 2 feet cotton webbing
Hemp is one of the best fabrics for sprouting and nut milk because it is naturally resistant to mold. I found a good price for this specialty fabric at Amazon.
Directions: Lay the fabric flat. Pull the long end of the fabric up over itself until the double layer is the length you want the bags. Cut the top single layer off. At the fold, move six inches from the side and cut on an angle to six inches on the opposite side (open edge). The idea is to have two alike bags, opposite each other.
The shape of the bags doesn’t matter as much as the principles. The principles being 1. That the bags be narrow enough to allow air flow and wide enough to access the beans and properly clean the bag. 2. don’t have any points in your bag. Points are hard to clean. 3. Roll the seam and sew so that there is no salvage edges. Just to make it as easy as possible to keep clean. I put the good side in-side the bag towards the sprouts.
Hem the raw edges of the bag around the mouth. Cut six inches of cotton webbing. Roll the edges under and place the tips on either side of the tall-side of the bags edge. Sew the ends on to the bag to create a hanging loop.
With the extra I was able to make four more small bags. I could have made 4 big and 2 small bags. You will want to sprout several things at the same time. The large bags can double as nut milk bags. (In that case, having four is convenient.) I will soon have a post on making homemade nut milk.
